Petition For Common Sense Growth

As a citizen and/or property owner in the town of Oriental, I would like to express my opinion concerning the proposed development in Oriental. While it is not our intent to inhibit free enterprise in Oriental, it is our right and responsibility to express our concerns regarding the future growth of our community.

Oriental has a tremendous potential for growth. It is coming. As citizens, we have two options regarding the future of our community. We can sit back and quietly observe the random development of Oriental and hope that the change is beneficial to our community, or we can take an active role in defining the direction of the growth to assure that it is appropriate and beneficial to all citizens of our community. Hope is not a strategy.

If we choose to sit back as idle observers we can hold only ourselves accountable for detrimental results. If we choose to take an active role in establishing the standards for Orientals growth, the end result will be a showcase community that preserves the local heritage, protects property values, and embraces positive change to the benefit of all it’s citizens.

At the present time, there is no collective vision of what Oriental can or should be, but rather individual and disparate goals. While there is a Growth Management Ordinance in place, it is lacking in scope and direction. As citizens of the community of Oriental we have a vested interest in shaping the towns growth and our future. By my signature, I am petitioning the town board to review and amend the Growth Management Ordinance to include but not be limited to the following:

    •Establish architectural guidelines

    •Establish an architecture approval process

•Establish guidelines for commercial property landscaping

    •Establish an enterprise zone

    •Establish a historical preservation zone

    •Establish guidelines for Chain/Franchise businesses

    •Establish guidelines for signage
