Team ODC captures bragging rights in the season’s first interclub regatta

 

It was a winning weekend for the Oriental Dinghy Club at this year’s Clark Cup hosted by Blackbeard Sailing Club at Fairfield Harbour.  The initial ICRC regatta of the season drew an entry of 48 boats. One design classes of Sunfish, Ensign, San Juan 21 and Isotopes sailed on Upper Broad Creek and  five classes of Performance Handicap Racing Formula (PHRF) yachts sailed on the river.  The PHRF divisions were Spinnaker A and B, Performance Jib and Main and Cruising Division.  With the best five scores counting for each club, ODC came out the winner with just 8 points maintaining a tight grip on the trophy now standing in the lobby of First Citizens Bank in Oriental.

 

In the scoring, Neuse Yacht Racing Association (NYRA) was second with 10 points and Blackbeard Sailing Club was third.  The ICRC regatta series has two more events for the season, the Dragons Breath in August in Oriental to be hosted by the Oriental Dinghy Club and the Pamlico Sailing Club’s Hospice Cup at Belhaven in October.  The winning club will have the right to hold the Dick Horn trophy.  ODC has kept possession of trophy since the series began.

 

Winds were extreme on Saturday, with 20-30 plus knots, keeping many prudent skippers in port.  Sunday had near perfect conditions as the wind backed down to 10-15 knots.   Even so, Michelle Bessette of Oriental who was crew on skipper Bill Anrdt’s Sabre 36, “Maggie’s Magic” dislocated her shoulder in an unfortunate move on the boat.  When a chase boat could not be located to transfer Mrs. Bessette to shore and an ambulance, “Maggie’s Magic” returned to dock and retired from the regatta.
