Several hundred people — a larger crowd than expected – turned out Saturday for the fourth annual Art on the Neuse show on the grounds of the Oriental Marina. Featured were the work of 33 artists.
In the middle of the day, you could take in a lot of sunsets, thanks to John Knox.Unlike past years, not all of artists were from Pamlico County. Organizer Susan Cheatham says that the show also drew artists from New Bern, Wrightsville Beach, Pollocksville, and Greenville. (Several fine art students from ECU took part.) Two artists — Julie Gaines and John Knox — live aboard boats just off the terra firma of Pamlico County.
Fish-head? It wasn’t planned, but lined up this way behind Marlene Miller’s fish painting. The show featured paintings, brilliant glass, intricate pottery, finely turned wood, photography, jewelry and cloth work.
Also new this year, five benefactors viewed the art and awarded checks of $100 to several artists. Among the recipients were Jenny Boudreault, Susan Cheatham, Julie Gaines and John Hanley, all painters.
The benefactors remain anonymous.Susan Cheatham, who organized the event along with Toni Leavitt, says there was a steady crowd from opening at 9 through the mid-afternoon. Artists reported good sales, an important factor in a flat economy. Cheatham thanked the Oriental Marina for letting the event spread out over its lawn.
But enough words. Given the visual nature of the show, here’s a photo essay of some of the work and artists:
The air was almost like that in the kiln at Bay River Pottery. Candace Young said it was hot, but a good day nonetheless.
Life, art. Art, life. A painting by Susan Cheatham. Through the lattice work, other boats could be seen tied up in the harbor.
Manfred Rott’s woodwork.
This way to more art.
