The
results are in - with some surprises. Just one incumbent is
re-elected, Candy Bohmert. The new commissioners are Al Herlands,
Nancy Inger, Warren Johnson and Barb Venturi. The candidates
that ran on preserving Oriental appear to have won the day.
Perhaps significantly, none of the candidates that refused to
answer the questionnaires put out by both TownDock.net and the
local newspaper were elected. The new board will take office
at the December town meeting.
Among write-in
candidates for town commissioner, Alice DeBaun received 2, Tony
Tharp got 1 and John Delamar got 1 write-in vote. (The TownDock
dog, Ceilidh, who received 1 write-in vote two years ago, got
no votes in 2005).
Mayor Styron was barely re-elected, with just a 5 vote lead
over write-in candidate Alice DeBaun. Pamlico County Board Of
Elections Director Deborah Todd reminds us that these are preliminary
totals - that the "official" numbers will not be approved
until Tuesday Nov 15. The only race that would likely affect
would be the Mayor's race - none of the commission votes were
that close that an outcome change is likely.
Deborah Todd was wisely cautious when we asked Wednesday morning
about how the totals might be affected. As we understand it,
a write-in vote that was misspelled but appeared to be for Alice
DeBaun (example: Alice Debawn) was probably counted for Alice.
But that is why the vote is again reviewed before the numbers
become official. As the process was described, that review would
not necessarily add to Alice's vote count. It could add or subtract
(or remain the same) depending on what was found.
Kathy Enzerink, who worked with candidate Alice DeBaun on her
write-in campaign, tells TownDock.net that DeBaun may ask for
a recount in the Mayor's race pending the official results November
15.
