A
piece of the Town Dock is on this trip too.
The night before his departure, Bernie wondered aloud about
what small object from Oriental he might carry with him. A talisman
of sorts. (On his trip around the globe, he had a beer coozie
from M & M's restaurant in Oriental.) After the post hurricane
repairs were made to the Town Dock last fall, TownDock.net staffers
grabbed remnant pieces of wood of cut dock pilings. An actual
piece of the Town Dock? "Perfect" Bernie said.
He cut
off a four-inch strip to take along.
Bernie
holds his talisman.

Bernie’s also packing an expectation that this trip should
be “gravy… luxury travel compared to being out in
the ocean.”
“I don’t have to worry about sinking or being crushed
by a tanker at night.” On the side roads and dirt roads
of NC, Bernie says, he expects “less of a sense of having
to survive under empty skies.”
Crossing oceans as a single hander, as Bernie did in his sail
from South Africa to the Caribbean last winter, is a different
experience on another level. “When you sail alone for
up to 2 months you feel this cosmic absorption. I don’t
think I’ll feel that on this trip. This will be a lot
more social.”
That’s likely as the uncommon sight of a man on a mule
draws people out. Several turned out Wednesday near the Town
Dock as word of mouth spread that Bernie was starting another
trip from Oriental.
All
creatures great and small came to check out the man with
a mule. Notice village dog Samantha sniffing Woody's posterior
(don't try this at home).

Shameless promotion dept: Bernie got a free cup of coffee
for posing in front of The Bean with manager Susan Conley.
Woody tried one of the dog biscuits The Bean sells. As
popular as they are with dogs, they were spit out by the
mule.
